Traction devices were fitted to the wheels everywhere the ordinary tread lost its grip: in autumn mud, on an icy road and in loose snow. On a model it is one of the most conspicuous features, because it breaks up the smooth outline of the tire and immediately sets the truck into particular weather and a particular season. On a truck with six driven wheels there is also more area on which that change shows.
First wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water so that no mold release residue is left on the surface, as the paint would otherwise hold unreliably. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife and never snap them off; sand wet and with your airways protected. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, so it is good to try the mating surfaces dry first. Once they are fitted it pays to go over all the wheels with a dark flow and to add a build-up of soil in the places where it would really collect.
