This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from Hobby Boss captures the unusual float conversion of the Grumman F4F Wildcat fighter, known as the Wildcatfish. The package contains gray plastic, clear parts and a decal sheet. The model is intended to be glued and painted.
The F4F-3S was created as an experimental float version of the Wildcat carrier fighter. The standard airframe was fitted with a pair of large main floats and additional vertical fins to restore directional stability. The aim was to provide fighter cover on islands without prepared airfields, but the concept remained at the testing stage and never went into series production.
Glue the float struts and braces with liquid cement and let them cure thoroughly so that they hold the correct geometry. A primer coat and an airbrush pay off; bring out the American naval camouflages with a fine wash and a final matte varnish.
