The set holds pre-cut templates of letters and numerals of the American type in 1:48 scale. The characters are stuck on the model, oversprayed with paint, and once the mask is lifted off the marking stays painted rather than applied. The number at the end of the name tells the individual sheets within the line apart; the companion items carry different numbers.
Sprayed characters have no carrier film, so no glossy outline appears on the surface, which is what often gives a decal away. The marking also behaves as part of the finish: it can be coated with varnish, toned and sanded along with the surrounding area, which comes in useful on aircraft with a scuffed and sun-faded surface. The result stands up to a close look and to a photograph of the model.
It will be appreciated by builders of American aircraft in 1:48 scale who are not happy with decals, and by modelers who need to make up a code or a serial number that no decal sheet holds. Working with templates is slower, but the result looks a class better.
