An injection-molded plastic kit of the American patrol torpedo boat built by the Elco yard, in its late production form. The 1:48 scale is an advantage for a vessel this small: in it the cockpit, the deck armament and the articulation of the superstructure can be worked up, while the finished model does not take up as much room in a display case as the large battleships. The designation of the late type in the name refers to a production state that differed from earlier boats in the make-up of the deck armament and in details of the superstructure.
The Elco torpedo boats of eighty feet were wooden fast craft with gasoline engines, deployed on patrol and torpedo duty. They were built for speed and maneuverability, not for toughness; the armament was torpedoes, light cannons and machine guns on rotating mounts, whose make-up changed in the course of production. Late boats are told from early ones mainly by the layout of the armament and the handling of the bridge.
Glue the hull and sand the joint carefully, because every unevenness shows on a smooth side. It is practical to paint the deck before the superstructures and the armament go onto it; build the small weapons, the torpedo equipment and the railings separately and fit them only after the basic patina. For this type of vessel a matte coat with no gloss and a fine, rather restrained weathering suit: salt leaching, mild wear on the walked-on places and a darker tone in the recesses. The model looks good on a simple water surface of acrylic gel, where a run at full power can be suggested.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
