A standalone decal sheet in 1:48 scale for models of the Lockheed T-33A jet trainer aircraft in the service of the US Air Force. The type flew in enormous numbers and in many forms of markings, so sheets of this kind open up the possibility of building a machine that is not in the kit. Which aircraft the sheet covers is given by the manufacturer on the packaging.
The T-33A is the two-seat trainer version derived from the first production American jet fighter aircraft, the Shooting Star. The fuselage was given an inserted section for the second place, so the instructor and the pupil sit in tandem under a long canopy. One jet engine takes care of the power, and the structure is simple and durable. The machine became the basic means of transition training onto jet equipment and long served for auxiliary and liaison tasks as well. A natural metal surface with prominent tanks on the wingtips was typical.
The greatest enemy of decals on a glossy metal surface is silvering, that is a layer of air under the film which shows itself as a matte veil around the printing. The base therefore has to be completely smooth and glossy, the decal is laid onto plenty of water and the surplus is soaked away in an outward direction from the center. If the veil appears even so, it can often be saved by pricking the film with a very fine needle and laying on a drop of softener, which lets the air escape. It pays to work in parts and to let each group of decals dry properly.
