About product

1:48 USN Mk.XIII torpedo — a Brengun resin accessory

A cast resin Mark 13 aerial torpedo of the US Navy in 1:48 scale, intended as underwing armament for a kit of a torpedo bomber. It is not a model of an airplane but an accessory that is hung under the fuselage or in the bomb bay. Resin has a clear advantage here: the long cylindrical body without the parting line of a mold is smooth and true to its axis and calls for no laborious filling of the seam that on plastic parts runs exactly along its whole length. The manufacturer is the Czech brand Brengun.

The real subject

The Mark 13 was the standard aerial torpedo of the US Navy in World War II. It was carried by torpedo aircraft deployed from aircraft carriers in the Pacific. At first it suffered from problems on entering the water — it called for a drop from low altitude and at low speed, which made the carrier an easy target. The solution was additional features fixed to the torpedo: a shroud on the nose and a wooden stabilizing ring at the tail, which slowed the flight down and directed the entry into the surface. It is precisely these additions that give the torpedo its characteristic silhouette and they are a rewarding detail on a model.

Usage tips

Wash the casting in lukewarm water with detergent and let it dry. Cut the casting block off with a saw and level the surface wet and with respiratory protection. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Before gluing, check the position against the fuselage and any attachments dry — a long body quickly gives an uneven seating away, so check the axis by looking from the front and from above. When painting, separate the body from the warhead and distinguish the matte and the glossier surface; if you are going to show the wooden ring, a thin layer of a light shade with a hint of texture helps.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building American torpedo aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • Those who want to display a model with armament hung on it
  • Builders of naval aviation hardware of World War II
  • Anyone interested in a clean casting without a parting seam along the body

It is an accessory to a kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The number of pieces is stated on the box.

The Mark 13 was carried by American carrier-borne torpedo aircraft of World War II. The manufacturer does not specify a particular kit, so check the attachment against the documentation for your own model.

The make-up of the parts is stated on the box.

It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, after the release agent has been washed off and a primer sprayed on. Without a primer, paint holds poorly on smooth resin.
