Photo-etched valve hand wheels in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Brengun are a universal small accessory for dioramas and for detailing models; a model in its own right it is not.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set holds photo-etched valve hand wheels, that is the circular spoked wheels with which the shut-off valves of pipework are opened and closed. In 1:48 scale it is a universal accessory: it comes in wherever a scene has pipework, a tank, a compressor, a pump or an engine room. It is not a kit but small building material for modelers.
A valve hand wheel is complicated in shape and at the same time thin. Casting it from plastic or resin in a convincing form is practically impossible: the spokes come out thick and the openings between them are flooded over. Photo-etching, on the other hand, handles this shape perfectly, because it works with flat sheet and the openings are real openings. On a finished model the background then shows through between the spokes, which is exactly the type of detail that tells a carefully built scene from a hasty one.
The parts are small, so work over a light surface and with sharp tweezers. Separate them with a scalpel against a hard surface, never by twisting, because a wheel will then never be flattened out again. The wheel is usually glued flat on the end of a spindle, which can be added from fine wire or from stretched sprue. It is bonded with thin super glue, which you apply with a pin to the place, not to the part itself. Degrease the sheet with alcohol before painting, apply a primer and after painting bring the shape out with a dark wash, or with a dry brush in a shade of rust or brass.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue and paints are not included in the package.
