A cable drum is among the most characteristic equipment of storage yards, stations, power plants and building sites. In 1:48 scale it is a small scenic element that quickly gives a diorama a legible context: it is immediately clear what the space is used for and how big it is. It is not a model of a vehicle or a detail part for a kit — it is a stand-alone object of a scene, to be stood beside a model.
The drum comes into its own propped against the wall of a workshop, laid flat as an improvised table, loaded on the bed of a truck or dropped in the corner of an abandoned compound. It works in military as well as civilian scenes and just as well in a modern as in a period setting, because the shape of this reel has barely changed in decades. Two or three such objects placed about the area of a base will do more for the credibility of a scene than another model.
Before painting, wash the part in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let it dry thoroughly — a clean surface holds paint far better. Clean up any residue from production with a fine file or a sanding sponge. Lay down a thin primer, then the base brown shade, and pick the texture of the wood out with a dry brush in a lighter ocher. A dark brown wash will bring out the joints between the boards, and a fine pigment on the lower part will join the drum to the terrain. Choose the glue according to the material of the part; cyanoacrylate will serve universally, as it joins even dissimilar materials.
