A smaller span, a lightened structure and a clean surface: that is how a machine came about that could out-turn almost any opponent at low and medium altitudes. The Soviet command trusted it so much that it was flown over Berlin in the spring of 1945, and French pilots of the Normandie-Niemen regiment took it home with them after the war as a gift.
The cockpit of the Yakovlevs sits low and the lowered fuselage spine behind it carries another glazed part, thanks to which the pilot had a view to the rear as well. For a model that means small surfaces with narrow bars, where ordinary tape is harder to lay down and quickly lifts at the corners. The set offers masks for both sides, so the reverse of the frames gets the cockpit shade before the clear part is glued into the fuselage.
Soviet fighters used to be sprayed on the outside with a pair of gray shades and underneath with a light blue, with the transition between the colors often running close to the cockpit. Masked glass thus saves trouble not only when spraying the pattern itself, but also during the later emphasis on chipped paint, which on these machines is usually done around the wing root. The glass stays clean and the finished model keeps the impression of lightness this type was famous for.
