About product

The Yakovlev Yak-9T in 1:48 scale from the manufacturer Modelsvit

An injection-molded plastic kit from the Ukrainian manufacturer Modelsvit in 1:48 scale. The manufacturer builds on short-run molds with rich engraved detail. The build is therefore more demanding than with large-series production; the parts need careful cleaning up, dry fitting as you go and reckoning with a little filling, but the result is a model with faithful shapes and a fine surface.

The real subject

The Yak-9T was the variant of the Soviet Yak-9 fighter armed with a large-caliber cannon that fired through the hollow shaft of the reduction gear between the blades of the propeller. So that the long weapon would fit into the fuselage, the pilot's cockpit was moved back, so the aircraft has a markedly different silhouette from the basic version. The large caliber meant effective fire against resistant targets, but at the same time a small supply of ammunition and a pronounced recoil, so firing was done in short bursts. The construction was mixed, with a metal load-bearing structure and wooden parts of the airframe, and the type was produced in large numbers during the Second World War.

Building and painting tips

Finish the cockpit and paint it before you glue the halves of the fuselage together, as you cannot get inside afterwards. With short-run castings reckon with cleaning the mating surfaces up by hand and with a small amount of filler on the joints of the fuselage and on the leading edge of the wing. Glue with a thin cement for plastic. Spray the model with primer before painting, which will reveal small scratches left by sanding. Soviet schemes usually have sharp transitions between shades; you manage them well with masking putty or with tape lifted slightly above the surface. Gloss varnish under the decals will prevent them from silvering, and matte or satin varnish at the end will unify the surface.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of Soviet fighters in 1:48 scale
  • modelers with experience of short-run kits
  • those interested in a technically unusual solution of armament
  • builders who will appreciate rich engraved surface detail

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It carries a large-caliber cannon firing through the hollow shaft of the propeller and, because of it, has the cockpit moved back.

Rather not. It is a short-run mold, where the parts need cleaning up, dry fitting and filling in places.

No. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; paints and glue have to be bought separately.

With masking putty or with tape lifted slightly above the surface, and by spraying in thin coats.
