About product

The real subject

The abbreviation JATO denotes takeoff assist rockets, which for a short while add to the thrust of the engines and shorten an aircraft's takeoff run. They were used where the runway was short or where the aircraft took off at a great weight, and they were mounted on racks along the sides of the rear part of the fuselage. The best-known spectacle was made of them by the American C-130 with the nickname Fat Albert, the transport aircraft accompanying the US Navy's Blue Angels aerobatic team. A steep takeoff with the rockets was among the peaks of its display, until the stocks of rockets ran out in 2009 and the use came to an end.

What the set offers

The set brings a mounting for JATO takeoff assist rockets for a model of the C-130 in 1:48 scale, in a form corresponding to the aircraft Fat Albert. It finds a use both on a model built in flight and on a display-case piece, where the side of the fuselage with the rockets explains at first sight what machine it is.

  • A mounting for JATO rockets for a model of the C-130 in 1:48 scale
  • The form of the aircraft with the nickname Fat Albert
  • An accessory for a kit, not a separate model
  • The extent of the parts and the placement on the fuselage are given in the manufacturer's instructions

Building and painting tips

First try the placement of the mounting dry and mark it on the fuselage before painting, because after varnishing the position is hard to find. Cut the surplus material off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder down. Wash and degrease the parts before painting and choose the glue according to the material of the parts; for parts that are not of polystyrene, super glue has proved itself. Paint the rockets and their surroundings separately from the fuselage and tune the joints only at the end. If you are building the machine after takeoff with the rockets, count on dark traces of exhaust gases trailing back from the nozzles.

Who it is for

For modelers who build the C-130 in 1:48 scale and want to capture its best-known form. Paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
