An accessory intended for creators of scenes, not for builders of a single machine. The covers of sewer inlets in 1:35 scale are among the small things that turn an empty area into a real street. Armour Models issues them.
An urban scene lives from the details at ground level. They lead the viewer's eye over the surface, and as soon as it meets a familiar shape set into the paving, it confirms the scale of the whole build at once. Cast iron lids can moreover be used almost anywhere, because their appearance in European cities changed little over decades.
They look best set into a layer of putty or plaster before it hardens, so that they are flush with the surroundings. After drying, a dark shade run into the gaps and light dry brushing with rust and dust suit them. Tire tracks around the lid add credibility to the scene.
In an urban scene curbs, inlets at the edge of the roadway, bollards and broken paving go well with them. As soon as a regular rhythm of such elements appears on the area, the base stops looking like a bare board and begins to look like a real place. It pays to place them irregularly and to leave one turned slightly, because perfect symmetry looks artificial.
