The highest level of the line

The masking sets for this aircraft are made in three levels: Basic, Advanced and Expert. This item is the Expert level, that is the widest of them. Which masks it contains in particular is given by the manufacturer in the overview of the set, and if you are choosing between the levels it pays to compare the ranges before buying.

The real subject

The MiG-21F-13 is an early day fighter version with a narrow spine and a small cone in the intake. The canopy hinges forward and is joined to the windscreen, so it forms one large clear area. In Czechoslovakia it was built under license at Aero Vodochody under the designation S-106, and the kits from Kovozavody Prostejov, which the set is cut for, aim at exactly this subject.

Working with the masks

• Kabuki paper is thin and low-tack; it gives way to a slightly domed surface and after removal leaves no coating on the glass.
• Wash and degrease the glazing before sticking them on, otherwise the mask will not seat all the way around.
• Stick the masks on before spraying and press them down with a wooden stick from the center to the edges.
• First spray the interior shade, and only then the exterior finish.
• Take the masks off as soon as the paint is touch-dry; until then keep the sheet flat so that it does not buckle.
