Black Dog issues a whole family of small ready-made bases, and this one builds a scene around a street lamp. The casting brings finished terrain and an architectural element at once, so the work with filler, wire and plaster falls away.
A model standing on its own in a display case has no scale and no story. A vertical element such as a lamp gives the scene height, and it tells the viewer's eye how large the vehicle or the figure beside it actually is. At the same time it places the action in a town: a lamp above broken paving speaks of a street behind the lines and of fighting among buildings, without your having to build a whole house. That is exactly why street lighting is among the most frequently used props of urban dioramas.
First wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water, so that no trace of the mold is left on the surface, as otherwise the paint would hold badly. Cut the casting remnants off with a saw and level the surface. A primer in a light shade follows, then a stone or paving color and after that a dark wash into the joints. The metal part of the lamp takes a different approach: a matte dark color with a hint of rust around the foot and in the places where water collects. Drybrushing on the edges will finally bring out everything that is meant to stand forward.
The casting is unpainted and ready for finishing.
