The mask set 1:48 Captured P-38 Lightnings - Luftwaffe Insignia Paint Mask Set is intended for a pair of captured Lightnings in German marking.
Responsibility details are not available.
A sheet of cut masks for two P-38s which changed owners during the war and flew with German national insignia. A thin, slightly translucent tape is used, under which the engraving stays visible, so the marking seats exactly in place. The kit of the aircraft has to be bought separately.
The first of them came into German hands by way of northern Italy in 1944, the second followed it not long afterwards. Both then served a test unit, which collected captured Allied equipment, measured its performance and demonstrated it to fighter units. Because of the risk of being mistaken for the enemy they were given strikingly large crosses and supplementary codes on the fuselage.
A cross with a white outline is among the worst cases for decals: it breaks over rows of rivets and the dark base shows through under the light outline. With masks you proceed the other way round: first the light base, then masking over it and the addition of the dark infill. The finished marking has the same texture as the surrounding finish and needs no intermediate gloss layer. The straight edges of a cross also forgive a small inaccuracy in seating far more than a circular insignia does.
