1:48 F-4E / F-4G Wild Weasel V Phantom II USAFE Camouflage Paint Masks Set contains masks for the dark European camouflage scheme of the American Phantoms.
Responsibility details are not available.
Three sheets of pre-cut masks carry the dark camouflage scheme for the European battlefield, in which the American Phantoms served at bases in the Federal Republic and around it. The cut allows for the strike rendition F-4E and for the specialized F-4G Wild Weasel V, so from one set a pair of models from the same squadron can be covered.
Experience from the fighting over Vietnam led to the development of a machine whose only task was to find and silence the radars of antiaircraft missile batteries. The improved version first flew in 1975, it lasted in service until the middle of the 1990s and it flew a number of tasks in Operation Desert Storm, where it cleared the way for the strike formations. Receiver antennas distributed across the airframe and the absence of a cannon are the external recognition marks of this role.
With a finish composed of dark tones the edges merge and a model easily looks flat. Slight lightening of the centers of the panels and dry brushing on the edges of the stiffeners help; at the same time the transitions between the fields have to stay sharp, as otherwise precisely what makes the European scheme recognizable is lost.
The set is an accessory to a model; varnishes and thinner have to be bought separately.
