The 7.62x51 caliber round has been part of the standard rifle and machine gun ammunition of the North Atlantic Alliance states since the 1950s. It is used to this day and it is carried by most machine guns that are fed from a belt. A long belt running from the box to the breech is the most conspicuous mark of such a weapon, and on models it tends to be the part that kits treat in the most simplified way. It comes into its own on machine guns in helicopter doors, on weapons on vehicle mounts, on shipboard positions and with figures carrying a spare length over the shoulder.
It is a stand-alone accessory in 1:72 scale, that is, a part with which you replace a coarse shape from a kit or arm a model that had no belt at all. Bear in mind that in this scale an individual round is not quite a millimeter, so it pays to work over a light mat, with tweezers and without hurrying.
Choose the glue according to the material of the part; on parts that are not polystyrene, super glue holds more reliably. Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder carefully, so that the edges of the cartridge cases are not damaged. Wash and degrease the part before painting, or the paint will hold badly. The painting itself is rewarding: a brass shade along the whole length, a dark wash into the gaps between the rounds and gentle drybrushing along the edges are enough to make the belt look like metal at first glance.
For modelers in 1:72 scale who are finishing the armament of military equipment and aircraft down to the detail, and for builders of dioramas, where a belt lying loose in a box or on a deck comes in useful too. Paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
