The real subject

The P-38 is one of the few aircraft of the Second World War that need no caption: two tail booms, between them a short central pod with the pilot and above it the horizontal tail joining them. It was powered by two liquid-cooled V12 engines, supplemented by turbochargers hidden in the booms. The armament was concentrated in the nose of the pod, so the fire did not have to be converged and could be used effectively at a greater distance as well. The F, G and H versions belong to the earlier period of the type's service and differ from one another in detail.

Under the OVERTREES designation the plastic sprues from the kit are sold on their own. Decals, photo-etched parts, masks and instructions are not enclosed. The package is therefore aimed at the modeler who knows the corresponding kit and wants to build another machine, or who is keeping a reserve for modifications.

Building and painting tips

Have the documentation for the corresponding kit ready beforehand. With the pair of booms, take care that they stand symmetrically and that the tail surface is not twisted; it is worth laying the assembly on a flat board before the glue dries and checking it. Cut the parts off a little away from the gate, sand the remainder and wash and degrease the plastic before painting.

The package will please modelers who build American fighters in a larger series or who have their own stock of decals. The contents are plastic sprues only; decals, photo-etched parts, masks, instructions, paints and glue are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
