The standard Wehrmacht jerrycan is one of the most frequently seen small items on German equipment of the Second World War. It was carried by motorcycles with a sidecar, by trucks, by half-tracks and by tanks, because the fuel supply had to travel with the vehicle. It was given its shape as early as the 1930s and it holds to this day: a sheet-metal body with cross-shaped swages that stiffen the metal and leave the contents room to expand, three handles side by side and a folding closure lever that an operator can manage with one hand. The capacity is twenty liters. The rendition designated as the 1936 pattern is one of the early ones.
The jerrycans are separate parts, so you place them around the model according to your own idea: on a fender, on the rear of the bed, in the brackets on the sides or loose inside the vehicle. They serve equally well in a diorama, where they fill the corner of a field workshop or a pile of supplies by the road.
Cut the surplus material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the remainder carefully, so that the swages stay sharp. Wash and degrease the parts before painting, and choose the glue according to the material of the parts. A jerrycan stayed clean in the field only exceptionally, and that is exactly what makes it rewarding for a modeler: a base shade, a dark wash into the swages and dry brushing along the edges of the handles bring the shape out in a moment. Water cans were distinguished from fuel ones by white markings on the side, so a few pieces in the load can be separated in color.
