A paved surface in a fan pattern for 1:87 scale, which in railroad modeling is designated as HO gauge. The fan pattern is the design you know from old town streets and squares: the setts are not laid in rows but in arcs, which repeat one beside another and create the characteristic pattern.
The ground surface decides whether a scene comes across as a view or as a model built on a board. Paving suits squares, courtyards, station areas and streets between houses, where a smooth board would give away that it is an improvisation. The fan design carries a perspective of its own and widens an area optically.
First plan the area out dry and think where the curbs, rails or gateway thresholds will be; deal with the transitions between the paving and its surroundings before you glue anything down. Adapt the way you cut and glue to the material according to the manufacturer's instructions. In color the paving comes to life when a dark thinned shade is worked into the joints and the surface is then lightly passed over with a dry brush; the individual setts stand out that way. At the end uneven soiling helps: a wheel track worn by tires, darker edges by the drains, a lighter worn spot elsewhere.
For builders of dioramas and layouts in HO who put a scene together in parts and do not want an empty surface under their models to spoil it. The paints, glue and other building material are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
