Masking stencils for the markings of the British Boulton Paul Defiant turret fighter in 1:32 scale, cut for the kit from Airscale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Boulton Paul Defiant was an attempt to win an air combat differently. The pilot had not a single fixed weapon and all the firing was handled by a gunner in a rotating turret with four .303 caliber machine guns behind his back. Over Dunkirk in May 1940 it worked for a few days, because German crews mistook the aircraft for a Hurricane and attacked from behind, straight into the field of fire of the turret. As soon as that trick got out, the losses rose sharply and the machine ended up with the night fighter squadrons, later as a target tug and air-sea rescue aircraft.
In shape it is a rewarding subject. The turret breaks up the silhouette of the fuselage, the cowling of the V engine is slim and the national insignia on a large 1:32 model run over curves where a decal would have to be stretched with heat and softener.
The stencils are cut for the plastic kit of a British maker which previously devoted itself mainly to instrument panels and cockpit accessories. They come into play at the moment the camouflage finish is done and dry: only the part that is to be sprayed is pressed out, the surroundings are covered over with tape and the paint is laid on thinly and in several passes.
The resulting markings have the same surface as the rest of the paint, so no place with a different sheen arises on the model. With night machines, where the base is dark and the marking light, that shows doubly, because an applied decal gives itself away on matte black even after varnishing.
A practical note on storage: cut stencils keep their tack for a long time but do not tolerate dust. It pays to leave them on the carrier sheet until the paints are mixed and the model is ready, and to take them off one at a time with flat-jawed tweezers.
