The wartime simplified version of the Soviet three-ton truck with a wooden cab, a model in 1:100 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The letter at the end of the type designation hides a whole chapter of the war economy. When in 1942 there was a shortage of sheet metal, rubber and time, the three-ton truck was given an austerity version: a cab of planks and plywood with a canvas roof, fenders bent from flat strip instead of shaped pressings, and a single headlight on the left side. Only the rear tailgate of the bed could be dropped.
The savings went further still. Only the rear axle stayed braked and a number of small parts disappeared altogether. Even so the vehicle ran, and it was built in parallel in two plants to which production had been moved from the threatened capital. After the war machines of this version were used for a long time yet, often gradually converted to a sheet-metal cab.
It is precisely the simplified features that give this version its character, and at a small size they read best in paint. The wood of the cab will take a warmer and more uneven tone than painted sheet metal, while the angular fenders will appreciate having their edges drawn out sharply with a dry brush.
The missing right headlight is a detail that anyone who knows the real subject notices, so it pays not to add it even by mistake. In a group of vehicles on a base this type is worth combining with the older versions, because both forms ran side by side in a column. The contrast between the smoothly pressed older cab and the angular wooden later one is at the same time the best narrator of the phase of the war a scene is set in.
