Autocannone means a gun carried by a truck. The Italians seated a gun of 90 mm caliber on the chassis of the heavy Lancia 3Ro in this way and gained a weapon that moved under its own power and could fire from the cargo bed. The designation 90/53 is read in two steps: 90 is the caliber in millimeters, 53 is the barrel length in multiples of the caliber, that is a measure of how long the barrel is. The gun came about as an anti-aircraft one, but the long barrel gave it such penetrating power that in North Africa it found a use against armored vehicles as well. The crew worked the weapon directly from the bed with its drop sides.
In 1:100 scale the finished vehicle is small, but its unusual silhouette stands out all the more: a high bed with a gun above the cab looks unmissable next to ordinary trucks. The small format suits collections built up in groups and scenes where a whole convoy or a firing position is to be seen, not a single vehicle.
Cut the excess material off a little way from the part and sand the remainder down; small shapes will take only a light hand. Bond with super glue, which joins materials other than polystyrene as well, in small drops. Before painting, wash the parts, degrease them and go over them with a primer. Apply the sand shade of North African equipment in a lighter tone than you would choose at a large scale, and keep the wash fine; otherwise the model goes dark and the detail disappears. Pick out the barrel and the mesh parts with a dry brush.
