A set of three Soviet KV-1 heavy tanks in the production version of December 1940, in 1:100 scale. One package covers a whole platoon on a table or on a diorama.
Responsibility details are not available.
The KV-1 entered the service of the Red Army at the turn of 1939 and 1940 and immediately ranked among the best-armored machines of its day. Frontal armor of around seventy-five millimeters withstood most of the anti-tank guns with which the Wehrmacht set out eastward in the summer of 1941, and German companies had to look for other answers to it: the 88 mm caliber, artillery in direct fire, or an outflanking move. In a welded turret it carried a gun of 76.2 mm caliber and it was powered by a twelve-cylinder diesel engine, thanks to which, at a weight of around forty-five tons, it had a decent radius of action for a heavy tank of the day.
The package is laid out as a whole platoon, that is three identical machines in one carton. Anyone building a unit for a tabletop game or a group display case gets the whole formation in one go and from one production run, so the castings match one another in shape and in shade.
The 1:100 scale is the home of tactical games and mass scenes, where more vehicles meet on the area of one table than in a whole display case. The model measures a few centimeters, so clean edges, pronounced shading and restrained pigment are what decide; small accessories that would carry the whole impression at 1:35 are lost here. The December run of 1940 is moreover a nice pretext for a winter finish: a white overspray broke up into patches quickly in the first months of the fighting, and that is a rewarding subject for a color treatment.
