The diameter of the needle decides how much paint passes through the nozzle in a unit of time, and 0.7 mm is the upper limit on this airbrush. Such an assembly does not suit fine transitions, but it will reliably push through thicker materials which a thinner needle would clog: filler primers, matte varnishes or strongly pigmented covering shades.
The typical use is a base coat on large-area models. The fuselage of an aircraft model in 1:48 scale, the bed of a truck or the water surface of a diorama can be managed in just a few strokes, without the paint having time to dry into a grain on the surface. With masked camouflages with a sharp boundary, by contrast, reach for a narrower diameter.
The pair of needle and nozzle must have the same size, otherwise the cone will never close and the airbrush will start to drip. A nozzle and a nozzle cap are therefore listed in the same size as well, and a whole upgrade pack is available too. When changing over from a narrower configuration both have to be replaced; the needle alone is not enough.
With a wider needle the working pressure moves up as well. While a little under a bar is enough for detail, a dense filler primer needs markedly more, otherwise the material breaks up into coarse droplets and the surface gains a grain. It pays to thin gradually and to check the trace until it is continuous.
After a replacement it proves worthwhile to run thinner through the body of the airbrush and to try the flow on waste cardboard before a model comes in turn.
The best way to store a needle is fitted in the airbrush or in its original packaging. Left lying loose on a table it will bend against anything that falls on it.
