The F-4 Phantom II is a two-seat combat aircraft that became one of the most widespread machines of the Cold War and served with a number of air forces around the world. The name of the set lists the E, EJ, F and G versions. The E is the numerous strike and fighter variant with an internal cannon in the nose, the EJ is the Japanese version, the F the German one and the G a specialized variant for the suppression of air defenses. The landing gear of these aircraft is heavy, because the Phantom was designed from the start with carrier operations in mind, and the wheels are clearly visible on the model.
These are replacement tires with load flattening, that is, with the imprint of the aircraft's weight on the contact patch. Kit wheels tend to be round all the way around and the model then looks as if it were merely touching the ground. A flattened tire, by contrast, visually seats the model and gives it weight. The set is listed in its name for the SWS48-10 kit in 1:48 scale.
The flat spot belongs at the bottom, toward the ground, and on all the wheels at once. Before gluing, therefore, stand the model on a flat surface and turn the wheels so that they sit down over their whole contact patch. Cut the surplus material away with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the rest off. Wash and degrease the parts before painting, and choose the glue according to the material stated on the packaging. Do not spray the tires pure black; a muted dark gray looks more convincing in scale.
The tires alone are supplied. The kit of the aircraft, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
