FOD covers for the F-8E Crusader in 1:48 scale from Quickboost (Aires): resin protective covers for the engine openings of a parked aircraft, intended for the kit from Hasegawa. It is not a kit but an accessory for a model.
Responsibility details are not available.
A resin set of protective covers (FOD covers) for a model of the Crusader. It is NOT a kit of the aircraft: the base model is obtained separately, as are glue and paints. The maker of the accessory declares the set for the F-8 Crusader kit in 1:48 from Hasegawa.
FOD means Foreign Object Damage, that is, damage to an engine by a foreign object. A jet engine draws air in with enormous force and will reliably suck in a pebble, a nut or a tool forgotten on the apron, and the engine is finished. That is why a parked aircraft has its air intake (and usually its other openings as well) covered over. The covers tend to be strikingly colored, typically red, with a warning legend, so that the crew cannot overlook them before takeoff.
For a modeler two advantages follow at once. First: a fitted cover is a strong color accent that shows at a glance that the machine is on the ground, ideal for dioramas and for scenes on a flight deck or an airfield. Second, quite practically: the cover closes the intake, so you do not have to struggle with detailing and polishing the intake duct, which is otherwise one of the most tedious parts of building a jet. The manufacturer does not break the exact list of parts down further (whether the package also includes a cover for the exhaust nozzle and whether decals with the legends are enclosed), so that is not stated here; please bear it in mind before buying.
The Vought F-8 Crusader was an American carrier fighter and is famous for one technical peculiarity: it had a variable-incidence wing. On takeoff and landing the whole wing was tilted to a greater angle, so the aircraft gained the lift it needed without having to raise its nose; the fuselage stayed closer to level and the pilot could see the deck. It is precisely in a standing, parked form, with a cover on the intake, that the Crusader is a rewarding subject.
Before painting, wash the parts with water and dish soap, which takes the mold release agent off, as paint does not hold on it. Cut them off the casting block with a saw or a sharp knife, never snap them off. Gluing: cement for polystyrene does not work on resin, so use cyanoacrylate glue or epoxy. Sand only wet, as resin dust is harmful to health.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
