A large-scale kit of the German Albatros D.II fighter biplane in the form of the early production series, in a richer premium package.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Albatros D.II came about by reworking the D.I type and solved its greatest weakness: the upper wing sat too high and the pilot could see neither forward nor upward past it. The designers lowered it closer to the fuselage and replaced the vertical struts with splayed ones, so that the view improved without the machine losing lifting area. Power was provided by an inline six of around a hundred and sixty horsepower; the armament was a pair of synchronized machine guns firing through the propeller disc. In the hands of the pilots of the first fighter squadrons it became the most feared aircraft of the Western Front for several months.
The designation of the early series is not cosmetic. The machines of the first series cooled the engine with a pair of side radiators on the flanks of the fuselage; only later examples received a radiator built into the center of the upper wing. The difference is immediately visible on a model and decides which particular machines and which finishes can be built.
The premium version of the same type stands above the basic package in the range by the scope of its contents. Go through the list of contents before building, then, so that you know what you are getting in addition; the set is intended for more experienced builders, not as a first model to start with.
On a biplane the order of the work decides: finish and paint the inside of the fuselage first, only then glue the halves together, and stretch the bracing between the wings only once the paint has dried. A dry assembly without glue saves a great deal of trouble with the struts.
