A set of figures, not a kit of the vehicle. Here Thunder Model completes its own range of heavy recovery vehicles with a crew that gives a finished model scale and sense: a recovery truck on its own in a display case looks like a machine without a purpose, while with an operator at the winch and the crane it tells a story at once. These are American crew figures, and the package also contains alternative heads for the French version, so two different national variants can be built from one set.
The crew of a recovery vehicle differs from combat figures in both stance and equipment, because this is work rather than fighting: operating the control levers, handling cables and chains, directing, resting beside the vehicle. Poses like these give a scene the dynamism that a standing figure with a rifle cannot offer. The alternative heads are more practical than they seem: headgear is the most conspicuous element on a figure and changing it alters the look of the whole group without anything having to be reworked.
The figures are cleaned of their parting lines very carefully; on a face and hands one careless scratch and the detail is gone. A proven procedure is to sand the seams, assemble the torso with the arms, but fit the head only after painting; a face is much easier to paint when nothing shades it. Before painting, lay down a thin undercoat, ideally sprayed, so that it does not clog the engraving. Skin is built up from a dark base toward the highlights, while a uniform goes the other way, from a mid tone with the recesses picked out by a thin wash. Finally a matte varnish, which unifies the sheen: with figures, a shiny uniform kills otherwise good work. Fit the figures into the group only after the vehicle is finished, so that you can check that the hands really do meet the levers and handles.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The vehicle, paints and glue are not included in the package.
