Republican Rome cavalry 1:72, a set of unpainted plastic figures of Roman cavalry of the republican period. Intended for dioramas, for a collection and for tabletop wargames.
Responsibility details are not available.
This set of plastic figures in 1:72 scale represents the horsemen of the Roman cavalry of the republican period. The figures come unpainted and are intended to be finished and painted; they suit an ancient diorama, a collection of historical figures and a unit on the gaming table alike. The exact contents of the box are given by the manufacturer.
In the Roman republic the cavalry was at first the preserve of the wealthiest citizens, because a horseman provided his own horse and gear, so service in the cavalry was a matter of property and prestige. The Roman cavalry (equites) complemented the legions, which built their strength above all on heavy infantry. The horsemen operated on the wings of the battle line: they handled reconnaissance, protected the flanks of the legions, pursued a fleeing enemy and guarded against an outflanking of their own position. The typical armament was a spear and a sword, and a helmet, a shield and often mail or scale armor served for protection; the rider stayed in the saddle without stirrups, which were not yet used in Europe of that time. Over the course of the republic Rome relied more and more on allied cavalry, which had a stronger tradition of horsemanship. This era covers the clashes with Gallic tribes, with Hellenistic armies and the Punic Wars.
First wash the figures in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry, because the paint will then hold much better. Remove the mold seams and flash with a sharp scalpel and a fine file, and on the horses pay attention to the seams on the body and the legs. Paint the riders and the horses separately and only then put them together, because otherwise the details of the harness and the saddle are hard to reach. Apply a thin coat of primer, ideally a light gray one, and continue with acrylics: first the base tones, then a darker wash into the folds of the tunic, the mail armor and the horse harness, and finally a dry brush on the edges of the helmets, the shields and the horse's muscles. Metal (the helmet, the sword, the spearhead) comes to life with a metallic shade burnished with graphite or a dark wash. Seal the finished figures with a matte clear coat and use sand and dry grass on the bases.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
