Six tenths of a millimeter from the bulletproof family. A size for the fine layout of fasteners on protective plates and for models of smaller and medium scales.

The second grade from the bottom is no longer a mere suggestion. The eye catches it on a finished surface even without bringing the model up close, and at the same time the part keeps a delicacy that the coarser values lack. It is in this range that there tends to be the most work, because most of the joints on medium-sized machines fall here.
Anyone building from period shots needs reliable signs. Three of them work. The first is the flats: a hex casts a different shadow on each of its walls, so the outline looks faceted, whereas a rivet has a smooth transition. The second is the ring around the head: if a washer lies beneath it, it is almost certainly a demountable joint, because a rivet usually needs no washer. The third and most reliable sign is wear on the paint. Around a part that has been undone repeatedly the paint tends to be scuffed in a circle following the reach of the tool; with a permanent joint nothing of the kind appears.
That third sign is worth attention when painting the model too. A fine ring of scuffing around the head does more for credibility than the most accurate shape of the part itself. A pinch of a lighter pigment applied with a small circular movement is enough and the surface immediately gains a history of its own.
