Above the millimeter mark. The 1.1 mm value belongs on the bold joint groups of armored machinery, where the joint should be readable even in a photograph of the finished model.

Eleven tenths of a millimeter is already a fair piece of mass in modeling scale. A part of this size carries a shadow of its own and in side lighting it creates a rhythm on the surface that a photograph willingly captures. It pays to work with it sparingly and to place it where it has something to say.
The most interesting stories on the surface of a machine arise from repair. A protective plate damaged in the field is replaced with whatever is at hand, and the new set of fasteners usually does not match the original. Two generations of mounting thus meet on one panel, often two different sizes as well, and around the freshly tightened parts the aged layer of paint and dirt that the surroundings have is missing. Models that respect this small thing look lived-in without having to be flooded with mud.
A permanent joint behaves the other way round in such a situation. A riveted band is not repaired in the field, because there is no equipment for it, so the damaged place is either hastily welded or covered with an added plate. The difference between the two approaches is readable on the surface and is worth imitating. On a model it stands out when the repaired place is left a shade lighter and the edges around it stay crisper than elsewhere.
