When to reach for the fifteen-tenth grade

The difference between one grade and the next is hardly perceptible in a photograph, but on a finished model it decides. A diameter of 1.5 mm lies in the middle of the coarser part of the selection and suits places where the rivet is to be noticeable from a normal viewing distance without looking like a foreign body on the part. Typically these are the joints of load-bearing parts, the bolting of footpegs or the anchoring of covers, that is places where the real structure uses heavier fasteners than on small equipment.

Count the positions out in advance

The best preparation is a photograph of the subject and a pencil. Go over the shot, mark every place a part will go and only then decide by the result how much you need. The name carries only the dimension, not the contents, so the estimate has to come from you. With larger projects it pays to buy by individual diameters and assemble a finished model from several packages rather than rely on a single one.

What will make the work easier

• A moistened brush tip holds a small part while carrying better than the fingers.
• Try the seating dry, and only then reach for the glue.
• Store the remaining pieces in a sealable pot labeled with the diameter.
• When varnishing, cover the head with masking fluid if it is to stay glossy.

The part complements a kit, it does not replace it, and it presupposes basic equipment for working with very small parts: a sharp pin vise, firm tweezers and above all good light from above. Anyone who has that at hand will manage the installation without trouble the very first time.
