Almost at the end of the dimensional scale

Eighteen tenths of a millimeter is the penultimate stop on the scale this family covers. In practice that means the part comes into its own in only a few places on a model, but in the most conspicuous ones. These tend to be swingarm pivots, the mounting of shock absorbers, frame feet or the bolt heads at brake calipers, that is joint groups where even a layman can tell that something is being joined properly.

Fewer pieces, higher demands on accuracy

The larger the head, the fewer of them you need on a model, but the harder it is to hide a mistake. A dome of this diameter seated crooked is visible from a meter away, whereas with the fine grades it would pass unnoticed. Before installing it therefore pays to check whether the mating surface is flat and to level it with abrasive paper if need be. It also pays to have a few spare pieces at hand in case the first attempt does not work out.

What to keep in mind

• Do the seating test in daylight; a bulb distorts the shadow.
• Wipe surplus glue off immediately; once dry a flat stain is left.
• Let the model rest after installing before you pick it up.
• Use a soft cloth to polish the dome; an abrasive would round the shape off.
• Do not seat the head over old paint; on a soft base it will tilt in time.
