VeilSide made its name with wide body kits for Japanese coupes, and its hand is recognizable even to someone who has never heard the name of the firm: an aggressive front end, flares that flow smoothly into the body and a rear end drawn out into one piece. The FFZ400 kit is meant for the current generation of the Nissan Z, that is, for the car with which the marque returned after years to a front-mounted six-cylinder and rear-wheel drive. The combination of retro proportions and modern body work made it one of the most frequently converted new cars.
A chrome-plated rendition is a chapter of its own among collector's miniatures. It is not a metallic paint but a mirror-bright layer laid over the whole body, which markedly changes how the shape is perceived: the edges are lost and reflect the surroundings. Such pieces tend to be released in smaller numbers than the ordinary color versions and in collections they serve as the focal point of a shelf.
A mirror surface is more sensitive to fingerprints and to small scratches than matte paint. Pick the model up by the chassis rather than by the flanks, and use only a dry soft cloth with no chemicals for cleaning. The ideal place is a closed display case away from direct sunlight, where the shine will keep unchanged for years.
Chrome-plated renditions work as a highlight of light in a display case and tend to be what the eye catches first. Collectors therefore usually stand them in the front row or under spot lighting, where only the reflection shows how accurately the shapes of the VeilSide kit are cast.
