A pair of modern Japanese Type 04 missiles with thrust vectoring, castings for large fighter models.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set depicts a pair of AAM-5 missiles, listed at home as Type 04 after the year of introduction. This is a markedly newer design than the previous domestic generation: it carries an imaging infrared seeker head, the thrust of the motor can be vectored by the nozzle, and with a helmet-mounted sight the pilot can send the missile far to the side of the direction of flight without having to turn the aircraft after the target.
The appearance is therefore different. While the older generation relied on large front fins, this one has a smoother body and solves the control mostly at the rear, which at first glance makes it a stockier weapon. It is precisely by this that the two Japanese generations are reliably told apart in a photograph.
It entered service in the middle of the first decade of this century, so on a model it makes sense on machines from roughly that time on. Anyone building an aircraft in a form from the 1990s cannot hang this missile under the wing.
The casting is separated from the block with a cut as close to the body as possible, so that no step is left that would show through after painting. Sanding is done across, not along, otherwise a flat spot appears on the rounded shape.
Before spraying it pays to put the missile on a wire stuck into polystyrene. Holding it in the fingers wipes the primer off the thin body before it has time to dry. A finished piece is then easier to hang straight onto the pylon, because nobody has to touch it by hand even while the paint is drying.
