An extensive set of the bomb bay of the heavy Boeing bomber for the large kit from the HK Models brand. The most comprehensive item of the whole range.
Responsibility details are not available.
The real subject is the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, the symbol of daylight bombing over Europe. The Eighth Air Force flew it from 1943 in tight formations in broad daylight, relying on the crossfire of its machine guns and paying for it with heavy losses. The Fortress meanwhile won the reputation of a machine that would bring its crew home even with a piece of the tail shot away.
The bomb bay in this airframe is unexpectedly narrow. The space between the cockpit and the radio operator is spanned only by a narrow catwalk, crossed with the help of a rope stretched at shoulder height, and on both sides stand vertical racks with bombs hung one above another. It is precisely this inside that makes a large scale meaningful: with the doors closed nobody will see it, while open it draws more attention than all the rest of the model.
It is the most extensive item in the range of this brand, which corresponds to the amount of material needed for a complete interior. The build rather suits more experienced modelers: the parts are fitted before the fuselage is closed, and any inaccuracy then shows on the joints that follow.
It pays to work section by section, to test each one dry and to glue it only once the whole assembly passes through the bomb bay opening without force. It is sensible to finish the painting and shading of the interior before closing the airframe.
The set is built for the kit of the HK Models brand in this scale and assumes an open bomb bay, that is, a model displayed on the ground between flights.
