A matte clear varnish is the last layer that unifies the surface of a model: it evens out the differences in sheen between paints, it hides the edges of decals and it seals the work with shadows and dusting beneath itself. This one is two-part, urethane. It does not harden by the evaporation of a solvent but by a chemical reaction with the hardener, so it creates a hard and durable surface that will bear handling and the gluing on of further parts. The set holds the matte varnish, the hardener and the thinner, that is everything needed for mixing it.
Mix the components in the ratio the maker's instructions state, and measure them out as precisely as possible; with two-part systems the ratio is not replaced by an estimate. Mix only as much varnish as you can work through, because a mixed batch has a limited pot life and gradually sets in the cup. It is applied with an airbrush, in thin even coats with a pause between them. A heavy wet coat runs and on a matte varnish it also upsets the evenness of the matte. Rinse the airbrush with thinner right after you have finished spraying, otherwise the mix will set hard in it for good.
Two-part urethane varnishes are among the most aggressive things worked with on a modeling bench. Use a respirator with a suitable filter, gloves and good ventilation, ideally a spray booth. Before applying it to a finished model, try the varnish on a test piece so that you know what the resulting degree of matte looks like.
