The simplest of the hubs offered: a hub with three spokes, as the early Spitfires carried. A pair of cast wheels rounded out with three tires makes it possible to choose the tread pattern according to a particular real subject.
Responsibility details are not available.
When the first production machines reached the squadrons in the summer of 1938, the airfields of the Royal Air Force were still mostly grass. The fighter stood, taxied and took off on them daily, so the whole load was carried through the narrow landing gear straight into the soft surface. The early hubs therefore had a plain shape with three spokes, and many photographs from the summer and autumn of 1940 capture them muddy right up to the rim.
The bag hides two main wheels cast in a mold and with them three different tires. The choice is up to the builder and follows a period photograph, because the units received rubber from several suppliers and the tread drawing differed. The surface of the casting is smooth, with no flash along the circumference.
The plastic kit remains the main item; it decides the version and the size of the whole task. The set of wheels is added as a small thing, whose benefit, though, is visible at once: the model comes down onto the base with the full shape of a tire instead of with a geometrically exact but lifeless-looking part from a mold.
A small part that carries the whole model, and one that during the build is usually thought of only right at the end.
