A deck covering mask for the battleship Bismarck as of 1941 in 1:700 scale is a pre-cut masking sheet for spraying the deck areas of the Flyhawk FH1132 plastic kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set holds pre-cut covering masks for painting the deck of the plastic kit of the German battleship Bismarck as she was in 1941. It is not a wooden veneer: once the mask has been used, the surface of the deck stays plastic and only its division of color changes. That is the main difference from the veneer deck that the same maker offers as a separate item.
The choice between the two is not a question of quality but of the final look. Glued veneer gives the model the real texture of wood and slight differences of shade between planks, which looks best in a photograph. A sprayed deck keeps the original engraving and takes subsequent patina and weathering better, because it is all one layer of paint and nothing comes loose on it. A mask is also the quicker route, and worth starting with if you build several ships.
The base has to be smooth and fully dried. Press the mask down with a blunt wooden stick over the whole area and seal the edges with a thin coat of clear varnish. Spray several light coats rather than one heavy one, and take the sheet off with a draw at an angle before the paint has fully cured. Any slight tear of the edge can be put right with a fine brush while the model has no final varnish yet.
This is a masking accessory for a plastic kit, not a model and not a wooden deck. The paints, varnish and kit are not included in the package. The sheet is cut for the Flyhawk FH1132 kit; check the match before buying.
