About product

A masking set for the cockpit glazing of the A-36 Apache and P-51 Mustang in 1:72 scale

This is an aftermarket accessory from the Czech maker Brengun, that is an accessory to a model you already have at home. The set holds self-adhesive masks cut to the shape of the frames of the cockpit glazing, which let the canopy be sprayed with a sharp transition between the clear area and the color of the frame. It is not a kit or an aircraft model; the set is intended for the Brengun kit.

Why mask instead of painting with a brush

Cockpit frames are among the most closely watched places on a finished model and in 1:72 scale they are very thin. Painting along the edge by hand as a rule leaves an uneven line, and an overrun on a clear part is hard to put right, because every sanding spoils the clarity. A precisely cut mask holds the line for you, and the frame is then sprayed in the same color and with the same degree of gloss as the rest of the airframe, so the cockpit blends visually with the fuselage.

How to work with the masks

First wash the clear part in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry freely, so that the mask adheres well and no greasy marks from your fingers are left under it. Lift the individual pieces off the sheet with the tip of a scalpel or with tweezers, lay them on dry and press them down with a soft wooden stick, especially on the curves. Cover the remaining areas with ordinary masking tape. Spray in thin coats so that the paint does not get under the edge of the mask. Lift the masks shortly after the paint has dried, while the layer is still flexible, and pull them off slowly and at an angle to the surface.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build this type in 1:72 scale and want cleanly bounded frames
  • Those who cannot manage a thin line with a brush or with freehand-cut tape
  • Builders who want to cut the time spent masking small parts
  • Collectors finishing a model for a display case or a competition table

The accessory is supplied on its own. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a masking set, that is an accessory to a model you buy separately. The set itself holds only the masks for the cockpit glazing.

It covers the clear areas of the canopy so that the paint sticks only to the frames. The result is a sharp edge between frame and clear area with no touching up by hand.

Best shortly after the paint has dried, while the layer is flexible. Lift them slowly and at an angle to the surface so that the edge of the finish does not peel.

The masks are cut to the shape of the canopy of one particular Brengun kit. With another manufacturer the shape of the frames may differ.
