A kit of the SM-3 anti-ballistic missile in 1:72 scale. The box holds two missiles and bases, so it makes a pair of stand-alone display models.
Responsibility details are not available.
The SM-3 is an American anti-ballistic guided missile intended to destroy ballistic missiles. It is launched from the vertical launch cells of warships and differs from an ordinary anti-aircraft missile both in its task and in the way it destroys its target: it does not shoot the target down with an explosive warhead but by direct impact at great altitude, that is, above the boundary of the atmosphere. To make that possible it carries a separable guidance section at the tip, which parts company once the motors have burned out and makes its own way to the target. That is why the SM-3 has a slender, multi-stage shape which looks quite unlike an aircraft on a model and makes an unusual companion to ship and aircraft models in a display case.
According to the name, the box holds two missiles and bases. The model is therefore built as a display piece standing upright, not as a part to be hung under another model. The manufacturer's instructions give the exact number of parts, the order of assembly and the recommended glue.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and a display case are not included, unless stated otherwise.
