About product

Avia S-199, a 3D printed cockpit for the Erla canopy, 1:72 (Eduard)

This item is not an aircraft kit. It is a detail accessory: 3D printed cockpit parts in 1:72 scale that replace the simplified interior of the plastic Avia S-199 kit in the version with the Erla sliding canopy. The manufacturer is the Czech firm Eduard. The set works on the place that is most visible on a finished model, the space under the glazing, where everyone who picks the model up will look.

The real subject

The Avia S-199 is a post-war Czechoslovak fighter built from the airframe parts of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 G combined with a power plant originally intended for the bomber program. The combination of a fighter airframe with this engine and a massive propeller changed the behavior of the aircraft on take-off and landing fundamentally. The Erla type canopy has taller glazing and sparser framing than the older version, so the interior is more visible under it, and that is exactly why replacing the cockpit pays off on this type.

How much work the set calls for

3D printing is worked differently from plastic. The parts are cut away from the print supports with a sharp knife or a fine saw, the remains of the supports are sanded down and the surface is cleaned. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, because ordinary cement for plastic does not act on this material. Before gluing, try seating the parts in the fuselage dry, because after the interior is replaced the cockpit walls sometimes have to be thinned so that the fuselage halves close without pressure. Sand with respiratory protection, ideally wet. Apply a base coat before painting, otherwise the shade takes unevenly on the printed surface.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who are building the Avia S-199 in the Erla canopy version and want the cockpit open
  • Those who will take on cutting and sanding resin or printed parts
  • Those interested in post-war Czechoslovak aircraft
  • Builders who are bothered by a flat plastic interior under large glazing

This is an accessory for a kit, not a standalone model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a detail accessory, 3D printed cockpit parts that are fitted into a plastic kit. The kit itself has to be bought separately.

Cyanoacrylate glue. Ordinary cement for polystyrene does not dissolve this material, so the joint will not hold. Gluing in small amounts and trying the parts dry first both prove their worth.

The SPACE range are colored printed decals that are laid on the surface of a part and are not painted over afterwards. This set, by contrast, is a replacement for the plastic parts: they are cut, glued and painted, but they also change the shape and the depth of the cockpit.
