Resin castings of the cooling flaps in 1:72 scale for a model of the Avro Shackleton aircraft. On piston engines the flaps open and close according to the cooling needed, so they can be shown on a model in a position other than closed. It is a replacement part for a plastic kit, not a kit in itself.
The Avro Shackleton was a British four-engine aircraft with piston engines, used above all for maritime patrol and for hunting submarines; later it served in the role of an airborne early warning patrol aircraft as well. Thanks to its four engine nacelles, it is exactly their rendering that is one of the most conspicuous places on a model.
The cooling flaps form a ring of thin plates on the rear of a nacelle. An injection mold manages them either as suggested engraving or as a thick-walled part in one position. A resin casting can have thinner edges and as a rule offers a more accurate shape, which in 1:72 scale shows on the outline of the nacelle.
Wash the castings with detergent, cut the casting block off with a saw and true the surface wet on a base – on a ring-shaped part a flat mating surface is what decides, otherwise an uneven gap arises all round. Sand with protection for your airways, and glue with super glue. Before you glue the part in, try it dry and even out any difference in diameter by sanding the nacelle, not the casting. Paint the internal surfaces in a dark shade beforehand, as once glued you will not get in there. At the end, a thin wash helps, as it brings out the gaps between the plates.
The set is an accessory for a kit, not a model in its own right. It is supplied unpainted, and paints and glue are not included in the package.
