About product

Eduard 1:72 B-25B Mitchell bomb bay - photo-etched bomb bay

A photo-etched set in thin brass sheet from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for the small 1:72 scale. The bomb bay is the compartment in the fuselage for the bomb load, including the racks, the shackles and the internal structure. In 1:72 kits that space is usually only suggested, because injected plastic cannot mold thin load-bearing elements. The set is not a kit and not a model - it is a narrowly focused accessory for a modeler who wants to open the bomb bay up.

How it differs from other photo-etched sets

The manufacturer divides its etch by part of the model: there are interior sets, exterior sets, landing flap sets or, as here, bomb bay sets. This one belongs to the last group and of them all it depends most on how you build - it makes sense only with the bomb bay doors open. The etch is unpainted, unlike the colored interior sets, which come pre-printed. Compared with mask sets the difference is fundamental: a mask adds no part, whereas this set gives the model a metal structure.

The real subject

The North American B-25 Mitchell is a twin-engine medium bomber with twin vertical tails and a nosewheel undercarriage. The B version belongs to the early production batches and differs from later machines in the arrangement of its armament and the layout of the nose. The bomb bay in the fuselage was fairly large on this type and with the doors open it shows well even in the small scale.

Building tips

In 1:72 scale the etched parts are very small - work over a light surface and over a cloth so that a part does not disappear. Cut them off with a sharp knife against a hard surface and bend them in a bending tool or between razor blades. The plastic bomb bay doors usually have to be separated and thinned. Glue with cyanoacrylate, degrease the brass beforehand and spray it with primer. Paint the inside of the bomb bay before you close it in with the fuselage structure.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want to build the model with the bomb bay open
  • Builders of small scales with some practice in tiny etch
  • Anyone interested in American twin-engine bombers
  • Those who add to a model area by area according to what each set covers

This is an accessory for a kit, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is the compartment in the fuselage intended to carry the bomb load. The set deals with its internal structure and with the shackles.

It does not. The detail would not be visible. The set makes sense only if you leave the bomb bay doors open.

They are small and they call for tweezers, a sharp knife and a calm hand. For a first encounter with etch a larger scale is more suitable.

The set concentrates on the structure of the bomb bay. Whether bomb load belongs to it as well is stated on the box and in the manufacturer's instructions.
