A waterslide decal sheet in 1:72 scale for the four engine Boeing B-29 bomber. It carries the markings of two particular machines from the fighting over the Pacific in 1945.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Boeing B-29 Superfortress was the most expensive armament program of the Second World War and swallowed more money than the development of the atomic bomb. It brought a pressurized cabin, remotely controlled gun turrets and a range that for the first time allowed the Japanese islands to be struck from bases in the Marianas.
The sheet offers markings for two particular aircraft. The first is the machine with serial number 42-24623, to which the crew gave the name Thumper. It served with the 870th Squadron of the 497th Bombardment Group and on the tail surface it carried the letter A in a square supplemented by the number 21. In 1945 the group operated from the island of Tinian, that is from the airfield the best known flights of the whole Pacific campaign took off from in the same year.
The second scheme belongs to the later B-29A form with the number 44-61809 and the lettering Sic em on the nose; its tail marking was the letter H in a square and the machine was listed with the 98th Bombardment Group. The two versions differ in details of armament, so a pair of models set side by side does not look like the same thing twice.
The printing is made as a classic waterslide decal. A cut out motif is immersed in lukewarm water, after a few dozen seconds the backing releases and the motif is left to slide onto the surface. That surface has to be smooth and glossy, otherwise silvery microbubbles will appear under the layer. Once dry, a decal softener and a final matte or satin varnish come in useful.
In the package you will find the sheet of markings on its own. Plastic, paints and glue are not part of it; obtaining them is allowed for separately.
