Replacement exhaust nozzles for models of the Harrier in the AV-8A, GR.1, GR.3 and FRS.1 versions in 1:72 scale. They replace the most conspicuous feature of the sides of the fuselage.
Responsibility details are not available.
The first-generation Harrier stands and falls with its engine. The Rolls-Royce Pegasus turbofan leads its thrust out through four rotating nozzles along the sides of the fuselage, two at the front and two at the rear. The forward pair carries cold air from the fan, the rear pair the hot gases from the core of the engine. The pilot turns all four nozzles together with one lever in the cockpit, and according to their angle the aircraft either flies forward or hangs in place. That is precisely what made the AV-8A versions with the US Marine Corps, the GR.1 and GR.3 with the Royal Air Force and the FRS.1 with the Royal Navy into machines that did without a long runway.
The set replaces the nozzles from the kit. It is a part that is visible from every side on a model of the Harrier, and whose shape and inner openings are among the things anyone notices first on a finished model.
Cut the surplus material away with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the rest off, so that the opening stays round. Wash and degrease the parts before painting. The rear pair, through which the hot gas passes, tends to be heat-stained brown and blue on real aircraft, while the forward pair stays markedly lighter; it pays to keep this difference on a model as well. Glue the nozzles on only after the fuselage has been painted, all turned to the same angle, otherwise the model looks haphazard.
For builders of the Harrier in 1:72 scale who are bothered by the soft shape of the nozzles from the kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
