A kit of an early version of the Bf 109, the so-called Emil, in the most widespread aviation scale of 1:72. It is a smaller model that fits into any display case and can be built in a reasonable time, yet it still leaves plenty of room for careful work on the camouflage. The maker is SabreKits. Check the actual contents of the package, the number of parts and the color schemes on the box.
The E version, nicknamed Emil, is the first truly mass-produced form of the Bf 109 and can be told from the later versions at first glance: a squarer wing with straight tips, an angular cockpit canopy with pronounced framing and radiators under the wing. It was powered by an inverted V12 Daimler-Benz DB 601 with direct fuel injection, which was a technical advantage under negative g compared with the carburetor engines of the day. The E-3 version carried a combination of machine guns above the engine and cannons in the wing. For the modeler the Emil is a rewarding subject above all because of the broken-up camouflage schemes of the turn of the 1930s and 1940s.
In 1:72 scale the cleanliness of the joints decides more than the amount of detail — build the cockpit and the landing gear bearing in mind that on the finished model it is mainly the outline that will be seen. Dry-fit the parts, glue with a liquid cement by capillary action and sand the joints once dry. Mask the cockpit canopy with tape cut into narrow strips or with liquid mask; on the Emil with its pronounced framing that pays off twice over. Spray the boundaries of the camouflage areas with an airbrush at a short distance and low pressure, so that the transition is not too wide in a small scale. Spray gloss varnish under the decals and unify the surface with a matte one at the end.
