About product

Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4 (1:72, Eduard)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the German fighter Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4 in 1:72 scale from Eduard. The E-4 subvariant is the improved form of the Emil, which played a major part in the Battle of Britain in 1940. Compared with the earlier E-3 it brought, among other things, revised 20 mm cannon armament and better protection for the pilot. The model is a classic injection-molded kit calling for ordinary modeling skills — cutting the parts from the sprues, cleaning up, gluing and painting. Check the exact boxing, the contents of the package and the number of marking options against the manufacturer's part number for this item.

The real subject

The Bf 109E-4 was one of the main variants of the Emil in 1940 and became one of the key Luftwaffe fighters during the Battle of Britain. Compared with the earlier E-3 it received revised cannon armament and strengthened armor protection for the pilot; later aircraft were sometimes adapted to carry a bomb or to a tropical fit. The aircraft was powered by an inverted V12 engine of the DB 601 series with direct fuel injection. The combats over the English Channel and the south of England tested both its strengths and its weaknesses against British Hurricanes and Spitfires.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts from the sprues and glue them with liquid modeling cement for plastic. Paint the cockpit interior and pick out its detail before closing up the fuselage, and mask the clear canopy while spraying. Apply a primer and the paints with an airbrush, apply the decals over a gloss clear coat and pick out the panel lines with a wash. Aircraft from the Battle of Britain often had light fuselage sides with mottling and prominent unit markings — add wear appropriate to frontline service.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Luftwaffe fighters and Battle of Britain aircraft
  • Anyone interested in the development versions of the Messerschmitt Bf 109E (the Emil)
  • Modelers with basic experience of building aircraft in 1:72 scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
