About product

Kovozavody Prostejov 1:72 Bristol Blenheim Mk.I: plastic kit (Vintage edition)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British twin-engine aircraft Bristol Blenheim Mk.I in 1:72 scale from the Czech manufacturer Kovozavody Prostejov (KP). The kit comes out in the Vintage edition, the range in which KP release older, historic molds with a new decal sheet and packaging. Do not expect modern fine engraving and flawless fit, therefore: it is an honest classic on which the modeler fills the seams and refines the fit personally. The contents of the package are given by the manufacturer on the box.

The real subject

The Bristol Blenheim Mk.I was a British twin-engine all-metal aircraft of the second half of the 1930s. It came from a fast civil airliner that at the time of its appearance was faster than the RAF fighters of the day, so the Royal Air Force turned it into a modern light bomber. It was powered by two radial engines and had a crew of three; the glazed nose and the dorsal gun turret were characteristic. Fighter development moved on quickly, though, and by the Second World War it was already a machine whose speed was no longer enough, so its use in the first years of the war was extremely hard on its crews. Besides the bomber role, a fighter (night fighter) version also appeared, with a gun pack under the fuselage. Blenheims also served in Finland, where the type was built under license.

Building and painting tips

Glue the plastic with liquid cement, which draws into the joint by capillary action and closes it from inside. On an older mold it is essential to try the parts dry before gluing; reckon on filling and sanding back the seams on the fuselage, the wing and the engine nacelles. Finish and paint the interior before you close the fuselage up, as the glazed nose and the turret leave it in view. Do not forget ballast in the nose: a twin-engine aircraft easily sits back on its tail, so add the weight before gluing the fuselage together. Use a primer, which will reveal any unrefined seams, and apply the camouflage with an airbrush in thin coats. Mask the glazing carefully, as the Blenheim has a great deal of it.

Who the model is for

  • For anyone interested in British aviation and RAF machines of the beginning of the Second World War.
  • For collectors in 1:72 whose collection lacks a Blenheim.
  • For modelers who enjoy working with an older mold: filling, sanding, refining the fit.
  • Rather for the more experienced, as a classic mold can be frustrating for an absolute beginner.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the range in which Kovozavody Prostejov release older, historic molds with a new decal sheet and packaging. The quality of the engraving and the fit of the parts matches an older mold, not a modern kit, so reckon on filling and sanding.

Rather not. An older mold calls for patience in trying the parts dry, filling the seams and refining the fit. A modeler with some experience will manage it without trouble and be rewarded with a type that is not often seen.

It came from a fast civil aircraft and at the time of its appearance in the 1930s it was faster than the RAF fighters of the day. By the Second World War, though, it was entering service as a machine whose speed was no longer enough; besides the bomber role, a fighter version also appeared.

Ballast in the nose: a twin-engine aircraft with a glazed nose will otherwise sit back on its tail, and the weight has to be added before the fuselage is glued together. Then careful masking of the glazing, of which the Blenheim has a great deal.
